On December 24th, Zheng Jieli, President of the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), along with other members visited Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST), where they signed a strategic cooperation agreement. Wang Hua, President of KUST, together with Cai Jinhong, Vice Chairman of the University Council, and Liu Dianwen, Vice President of KUST, met the visitors, attended the meeting and signing ceremony.
Wang Hua, on behalf of KUST, warmly welcomed the visit of Zheng Jieli and his delegation. He said that KUST has constantly expanded international cooperation with a positive and open attitude. The cooperation with RUPP is an important step towards expanding the international cooperation network of KUST and to serve the construction of a powerhouse of China’s opening-up to South Asia and Southeast Asia, which is of profound significance. He pointed out that the cooperation could not only enhance the scientific and technological innovation capabilities of both universities, but would also strengthen their abilities to integrate into and serve the economic and social development of the region of the Belt and Road. Wang Hua hoped that the two universities would take this exchange and cooperation as a chance to expand the mind, broaden the fields, deepen the cooperation, make innovations through collaboration and seek common development, so as to achieve good results as soon as possible.
Cai Jinhong, when presiding over the meeting and signing ceremony, said that China and Cambodia were traditionally friendly neighbors and “ironclad” friends. Yunnan province and Cambodia share similarities in climate, hydrology, geographic conditions and topography, thus facing similar challenges in the prevention and control of geological disasters. There exists immense potential for cooperation between the two sides in earth sciences and disaster prevention and control. Liu Dianwen introduced the development history, achievements, characteristics of disciplines, international cooperation and exchanges of KUST.
Zheng Jieli introduced the conditions, majors offered and international cooperation of RUPP. He said that the establishment of the Cambodia-China Research Center of Geo-Science and Geo-Safety (CG) will help improve the capabilities of both China and Cambodia in dealing with natural disasters and ensuring people’s well-being. He pointed out that China is one of the most important partners of Cambodia and the cooperation is not only of great significance to both universities, but also an important part of the cooperation of both countries. He also hoped that the two universities could take advantage of their respective strengths carrying out comprehensive and in-depth cooperation in talent cultivation, scientific research, platform construction and discipline construction, etc., and stated his belief that the cooperation between the two universities was bound to make great achievements with a bright future.
Wang Hua and Zheng Jieli, on behalf of their respective universities, signed the Strategic Cooperation Agreement on Science and Technology and Education, realizing the idea of cooperating on the “2+2” joint talent cultivation, and unveiled the plaque for the CG jointly established by the two universities.
Zhu Yingyan, Executive Deputy Editor and Director of the Journal of Mountain Research and Adjunct Professor of KUST, Bian Yi, Vice President and Tu Yaobin, Advisor of Cambodia International Chamber of Commerce (CICC), and Prof. Khan of Nanning Normal University were invited to participate in the meeting and signing ceremony.
Heads of Division of Personnel, Science and Technology Institute, Division of International Cooperation, Faculty of Public Security and Emergency Management, School of International Education, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Cultures, Library and other relevant departments attended the signing ceremony.
