On the morning of January 26th, the opening ceremony of the Russian and Belarusian Chinese Teachers’ Training Programme was held at Lianhua Campus of KUST. The programme is hosted by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation and organized by KUST. Twenty-nine non-native Chinese speaking teachers from Russia and Belarus participated in this programme. Yi Jianhong, vice president of KUST, attended the opening ceremony.

Yi Jianhong welcomed the teachers on behalf of KUST and thanked the Confucius Institutes and the Center for Language Education and Cooperation for their outstanding support of the training programme. He gave a general overview of KUST, reviewed academic collaborations and joint scientific research projects between KUST and the two countries, and expressed confidence that the programme will help advance international Chinese education in the future.

Shchepina Iuliia, a Chinese teacher from Russia and Volha Varantsova-Liubetskaya from Belarus made speeches, showing their expectations for the next ten days training and their heartfelt gratitude to KUST and the Center for Language Education and Cooperation. They hoped to enhance their Chinese teaching abilities through this programme so as to participate more effectively in the international Chinese language education.

The programme aims to enhance the Chinese language proficiency and teaching capability of Chinese teachers in Russia and Belarus by taking advantage of traditional Chinese culture and the cultural advantages of ethnic minorities in Yunnan. Therefore, a number of Chinese-themed courses have been designed according to the teachers’ learning objectives, age range, language proficiency, and cultural background. The courses include a lecture series on Chinese education, an exploration of traditional Chinese culture, an investigation of Kunming’s urban landscape, and more.

This non-native Chinese speaking teachers’ training programme is the first one held by KUST after the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically designed for Chinese language teachers working in local middle schools, elementary schools, and Confucius Institutes throughout Belarus and Russia. The programme aims to improve these teachers’ theoretical knowledge of Chinese language teaching, solidify the basis of their Chinese classroom instruction, and help them better understand traditional Chinese culture as well as the distinct charm of Yunnan’s unique ethnic culture.
