KUST's Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools Gains MOE Official Approval

On May 13, the Ministry of Education's Supervision Platform for Chinese-Foreign Cooperation announced the list of approved Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools institution. Among them is the "Malaysia Institute of Technology, Kunming University of Science and Technology," jointly established by Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). This marks KUST's first Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools institution officially approved by the Ministry of Education and represents a groundbreaking achievement as the first such institution in Yunnan Province.

Malaysia Institute of Technology, Kunming University of Science and Technology will commence enrollment in the same year of its official approval. In its inaugural year, the institute will admit undergraduate students for two programs: Electrical Engineering and Automation, and Engineering Management. These programs will be included in China’s National Higher Education Enrollment Plan and adopt a "4+0" dual-degree model. In 2026, the institute will launch a master's program in Electronic Information (Artificial Intelligence Specialization) under a "3+0" dual-degree framework. Students who meet the admission requirements of both KUST and UTM will be eligible for dual enrollment at both institutions. Upon fulfilling the graduation criteria, students will receive a graduation certificate and degree from KUST, as well as a degree from UTM. Notably, UTM ranks 181st in the 2025 QS World University Rankings and is one of Malaysia’s top five public research universities. It is widely regarded as the country’s leading institution in engineering, science, and technology.

Since the beginning of 2024, under the leadership of the University Party Committee and Administration, the Division of International Cooperation has taken the lead in coordinating with the Faculty of Information Engineering and Automation, the Faculty of Electrical Power Engineering, and the Faculty of Civil Engineering. With strong support from departments such as the Academic Affairs Office, the Graduate School, and the Finance Office, the team overcame numerous challenges, and the application was finally approved. The university will introduce and leverage high-quality scientific and educational resources from UTM to contribute actively to the development of Yunnan as a regional education hub and to the advancement of China-Malaysia educational cooperation.
