On August 4th, the International Summer School of “Complex Systems and Earth Sciences” hosted by KUST opened at Chenggong Campus. Tang Jiahua, Chair of the University Council of KUST, met with co-chairs, faculty and student representatives, including Professor Kim Christensen from Imperial College London, Professor Chen Xiaosong from Beijing Normal University, and Professor Chen Deliang (Göteborgs universitet) , a foreign academican of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Tang Jiahua welcomed the faculties and students of the International Summer School and expressed gratitude the teaching team for their careful design and organization. He pointed out that the International Summer School of “Complex Systems and Earth Sciences” should be normalized and form a brand with international influence, promote the construction of the first-level discipline doctoral programs in systems science at KUST, and support the university's "Double First-Class" initiative.
He expressed hope that top scholars, researchers, and students from both domestic and overseas will gather together to explore cutting-edge topics in complexity science and its application fields in Earth science, and build the International Summer School not only a platform for academic exchanges and friendship, but also a stage for collision of ideas and innovation.

The International Summer School of “Complex Systems and Earth Sciences” is an important initiative of high level international cooperation and exchange of KUST, as well as a key academic activity of KUST’s 70th anniversary series. The partners of this activity include Beijing Normal University, Imperial College London and Nanjing University. The co-chairs of the International Summer School are Academician Ma Yuqiang (Nanjing University), Professor Kim Christensen (Imperial College London), Professor Chen Xiaosong (Beijing Normal University), and Professor Liu Wenqi (Kunming University of Science and Technology). The 26 renowned instructors were experts from Göteborgs universitet (Sweden), Imperial College London (UK), Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (Germany), Technische Universität München (Germany), The University of Manchester (UK), Ben-Gurion University of the Negev ((Israel), Beijing Normal University, Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other universities and research institutions. The 57 participants were from Beijing Normal University, Imperial College London, Xiamen University, Sun Yat-sen University, Zhejiang University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tianjin University, The University of Manchester, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Faculty of Science and the Institute of Primate Transitional Medicine of KUST undertook the organization of the International Summer School.
