To promote the scientific spirit and popularise scientific knowledge of natural resources, the Faculty of Land-Resource Engineering and the Geological Museum held a series of activities on National Science Popularisation Day with the theme of “Celebrating the 20th National Congress of the CPC and Popularizing science to the future” on 18th September, 2022. During the activity, Wu Haiyan, an associate professor from the School of International Education, and Shen Cen, an associate professor from the Geological Museum, gave a vivid science popularization lesson to the representatives of international students and Chinese graduate students.

By adopting the teaching method of “Dual Integration” of professional Chinese learning and field learning, as well as the learning between Chinese and international students, whilst combining the featured exhibits of non-ferrous metals in the Geological Museum of Yunnan Province, Wu Haiyan introduced the rich mineral resources of Yunnan Province: the “Kingdom of Non-ferrous Metals”, and the outstanding contribution of KUST in the field of non-ferrous metallurgy. In addition, she told the story of Academician Dai Yongnian with vacuum metallurgy, as well as the scientific and technological strategies proposed in recent years, such as “Carbon Neutralization”, “Green Mining” and “Green Metallurgy”, so that the international students can have a more intuitive understanding of the influence of KUST in the world’s scientific research, and stimulate their enthusiasm to learn scientific Chinese.

Shen Cen introduced the history of the Geological Museum and the “World Rock and Mineral Specimens”, the treasure of the museum to the students. She introduced in detail the origin of the “World Rock and Mineral Specimens”, the legendary journey of these specimens moving south with Tsinghua University during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and finally coming to Kunming after several twists and turns, and the importance of these specimens in the rise and development of modern geological education in China. The introduction can help students better understand the Geological Museum of KUST and the special geological resources of Yunnan Province so as to popularise the knowledge of geosciences.
