On May 12th and May 19th, WANG Binhua, Chair/Professor of Interpreting and Translation Studies and Director of the Centre for Translation Studies at the University of Leeds, gave two academic lectures via videolink at the invitation of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Cultures of KUST. The lectures were attended by the teachers and students of the Faculty as well as representatives of teachers and students of English majors from other universities in Yunnan province.

The first lecture was entitled “The Important Role of Translation and Interpreting in China’s Going Global Strategy”. WANG Binhua started the lecture with some cases of mistranslation in early Sino-British diplomacy and modern international news dissemination. Then he analyzed the major causes and the possible grave consequences of the mistranslations. This revealed the significance of translation and interpreting in international communication and the crucial role played by translators and interpreters in translation and interpreting activities.

The second lecture was entitled “Exploring Approaches to the Continuation and Internationalization of Foreign Language Teachers’ Research”. Based on his own experience in undertaking academic research and publishing papers in core journals both at home and abroad, WANG Binhua illustrated how to structure and organize a research paper, and how to submit a paper for publication.

The two academic lectures were conducive to expanding foreign language teachers’ international research horizons and enhancing their academic research capacity. At the same time, they helped to create a positive academic atmosphere and stimulate students’ and teachers’ research innovation.

Dr. WANG Binhua currently is teaching at the University of Leeds as a Chair/Professor of interpreting and translation studies and Ph.D. supervisor. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) as well as the first Chinese scholar in the UK to be appointed as a Chair/ Professor of interpreting and translation studies. He has published over 60 articles in core journals both at home and abroad, and over 10 textbooks and monographs. For many years, he has been an invited tutor for the “Training of Trainers for Interpreting and Translation Programmes” organized by the Translators Association of China (TAC). He is also a visiting specialist at the Cambridge Centre for the Integration of Science, Technology and Culture.
