From January 22nd to February 1st, the Division of International Cooperation of Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST) organized nine students to travel to Cambridge, Oxford, and London in the UK, embarking on an 11-day interdisciplinary exchange programme at Cambridge University for research and course study. The programme aimed to immerse students in academic research through various educational courses and activities on and off campus. It sought to facilitate a deep exploration of interdisciplinary studies and research models across different fields, thereby broadening their international perspectives. The nine participating students completed the programme and obtained the official course certificate.

At the opening ceremony, Prof. David Cardwell FREng, Vice President of Cambridge University, delivered a welcoming speech to the teachers and students participating in the project. Esteemed professors from Cambridge University, including Professor Pietro Lio' in Artificial Intelligence, Professor Nicola Clayton in Cognitive Science, and Professor Thomas Krie in Medicine, met with the students. They expressed their delight in engaging directly with Chinese students as the teachers for the winter project of Cambridge University. Additionally, they placed high expectations on the participants, looking forward to a fruitful learning journey. The Vice-Chancellor and Admissions Officer of Cambridge University delivered a lecture on the British education system and interdisciplinary studies, guiding students on how to leverage their strengths in selecting Master’s research projects and guiding them in career and further education planning. Students also actively participated in various lectures and engaged deeply in the academic courses designed and taught by professors of multiple disciplines.

During the ten-day project, students visited Oxford University and learned about its long history and rich culture, leading position in many academic fields, and global influence. In London, the capital of the United Kingdom, students toured famous landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Elizabeth Tower, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Trafalgar Square, and Covent Garden. Visits to renowned institutions like the British National Computer Museum, the London Pathology Museum, the Burberry London Centre, the Imperial College Data Science Lab, and the Bank of England provided more profound insights into the history, development, and present situation of these industries, prompting students’ further thought on the industry and the future.

The Cambridge University Exchange Programme is jointly organized by St John's College, Sydney Sussex College, Lucy Cavendish College, and other colleges of Cambridge University. Compared with the research-oriented summer programme at Cambridge University, the 2024 Cambridge University Winter Vacation programme pays more attention to students' in-depth understanding of professional planning. This year's winter vacation programme covered multiple disciplines and research themes. Students can study artificial intelligence, business, finance, international relations, medicine and pharmacy, sociology, and other courses. Each theme was collaboratively discussed and designed by professors, scholars, academic leaders, and industry experts from Cambridge University, aiming to hone students’ skills, clarify their future educational plans, deeply experience the learning environment, and broaden their horizons of the world-leading universities.
