On the morning of October 16th, the opening ceremony of the 4th Lancang-Mekong College Students’ Goodwill Games and the 6th South and Southeast Asia College Students Culture and Sports Week-Kunming was held in KUST.
Zhao Derong (Deputy Director of Department of Education of Yunnan Province), Tang Jiahua (Chair of the University Council of KUST), Wang Hua (President of KUST), Pan Bo (Vice President of KUST), Ma Wenhui (Vice President of KUST), and Niu Zhiliang (Vice President of Yunnan Normal University) attended the opening ceremony. Attendees also included the representatives from Wuhan University, Sichuan University, Southwest University, Yunnan University and Wuhan University of Technology .Yi Jianhong, Vice President of KUST hosted the opening ceremony.
Athletes from 18 universities in 11 countries attend the Games
International guests attending the opening ceremony were Muhammad Akmal Abdul Wahab (Consul General of Malaysia in Kunming), Daophet Chanthanasinh (Deputy Consul General of Laos in Kunming), Siv Lim An (Consul of Cambodia in Kunming), Sung Hai Lai (Consul of Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Kunming), and the leaders and representatives from Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University (UBRU,Thailand), Souphanouvong University (Laos), Savannakhet University (Laos), Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports (Vietnam), Thai Nguyen University-University of Economics and Business Administration (Vietnam), Thai Nguyen University-University of Foreign Languages (Vietnam), University College of Technology Sarawak (Malaysia), and University Putra Malaysia.

Zhao Derong delivered an opening speech. He remarked that Lancang-Mekong College Students’ Goodwill Games and South and Southeast Asia College Students Culture and Sports Week-Kunming is a solid demonstration of Yunnan’s efforts to promote the opening up of education and the educational cooperation with neighboring countries. He said that the Department of Education of Yunnan Province will continue to support KUST in organizing this significant activity. Zhao hoped that Chinese and foreign youths would make friends through competition, learn from each other, and join hands to write a new chapter of unity, progress, friendship and cooperation.
President Wang Hua delivers a welcome speech
Wang Hua delivered a welcoming speech. He said that the 4th Lancang-Mekong College Students’ Goodwill Games coincided with the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. It would play an active role in promoting Yunnan as China’s pivot of opening-up to south and southeast Asia, enhancing Yunnan’s international publicity and influence, and advancing the establishment of a community with a shared future for Lancang-Mekong countries.
President Thamarak La-ongnual on behalf of foreign university delivers a remark
As a representative of foreign universities, President of UBRU, Thamarak La-ongnual said that he was very honored to participate in this activity. UBRU and KUST have established a good partnership in the past five years, and he hoped that the two universities could deepen the friendship and extend their cooperation and exchange.

On behalf of foreign athletes, Sinsana Phongmali, a student from Souphanouvong University (Laos), said that this activity provided opportunities for cultural and sports exchanges between young students from China and south and southeast Asian countries. He also expressed that the athletes would take part in the Games with the best mindset and strive hard to deliver their best performance.

KUST’s martial arts teampresents a wonderful performance
About 570 teachers and students from 18 universities in 11 countries and regions (including China, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam) took part in the Games, covering three major sports (men's football, volleyball and badminton) and seven other events, as well as cultural exchanges and study tours.
Wonderful Review
In order to serve the “Belt and Road” construction and the construction of Yunnan as China’s pivot of opening-up to south and southeast Asia, KUST initiated and hosted the South and Southeast Asia College Students Culture and Sports Week-Kunming in 2015. It aimed to enhance the communication and friendship with neighbouring countries and build a foundation for good neighborliness and win-win cooperation. The activity has served as a platform for promoting exchanges between youths from participating countries. Over years of development, this activity has become a well-known symbol of cultural and people-to-people exchanges between Yunnan province and south and southeast Asian countries.
The following is a review of the South and Southeast Asia College Students Culture and Sports Week-Kunming.
From May 24th to June 6th, 2015, the 1st GMS College Students Culture and Sports Week was hosted by KUST and co-sponsored by the GMS Business Council. Athletes from 13 colleges from Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, South Korea and Taiwan participated in the activity.

From May 22nd to 31st 2016, KUST held the 2nd GMS College Student Culture and Sports Week and renamed the activity as South and Southeast Asia College Students Culture and Sports Week-Kunming. It attracted 531 youths from 23 colleges and 32 sports teams from India, Laos, Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, China’s Taiwan region and Yunnan province.
With a good foundation of cooperation, rich experiences in organizing competitions and a good reputation, the event was recognized as one of the Early Harvest Projects of the First Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders’ Meeting. The State Council assigned Yunnan province to be responsible for the organization and implementation of the project, which was renamed as Lancang-Mekong College Students’ Goodwill Games and South and Southeast Asia College Students Culture and Sports Week-Kunming. From May 22nd to 29th, 2017, the 1st Lancang-Mekong College Students’ Goodwill Games and the 3rd South and Southeast Asia College Students Culture and Sports Week-Kunming was held in Kunming College.
On May 21st, 2018, KUST held the opening ceremony of the 2nd Lancang-Mekong College Students’ Goodwill Games and the 4th South and Southeast Asia College Students Culture and Sports Week-Kunming. More than 500 youths from 28 universities and 29 teams from India, Laos, Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and China participated in the activity.
From June 5th to 11th, 2019, the 3rd Lancang-Mekong College Students’ Goodwill Games and the 5th South and Southeast Asia College Students Culture and Sports Week-Kunming was hosted by the People's Government of Yunnan Province and organized by the Department of Education of Yunnan Province and KUST. The Games was also a sub-forum activity of the 2nd Yunnan-South and Southeast Asia Education Cooperation Forum. More than 400 students and teachers from 20 universities in 10 countries (including China, India, Laos, Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and Pakistan) participated in the activity.
In September 2020, with the application of KUST and the approval of the Ministry of Education of the PRC, the Lancang-Mekong College Students’ Goodwill Games and South and Southeast Asia College Students Culture and Sports Week-Kunming was listed as a project in the “Education Action Plan for the Belt and Road Initiative: Ministry-Province Brand Cultivation Programme”.
In December 2022, KUST initiated and established the China-South and Southeast Asia College Students’ Goodwill Games Alliance, with members from 20 colleges and educational organizations from 7 countries, including China, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Malaysia.
