Heated Topic in the Forum on Sino-Thai Higher Education Development

On 21st October, the Forum on Sino-Thai Higher Education Development went on at the Lecture Hall, C.C. Wu Conference Center of KUST. Centered on “Innovating Models of Curriculum Collaboration Higher Education”, the representatives from 21 Sino-Thai universities and research institutes offered advice, either in offline speeches or online presentations, on innovating models and optimizing practices of the cooperation and exchanges on Sino-Thai higher education. Nearly 170 Sino-Thai universities attended the conference.

During the Forum, YAO Faming, Vice president of Southwest Jiaotong University, gave a speech titled “Benchmarking the Practices of International cooperation on Word-class Education and Strengthening Educational Exchange between China and Thailand”, previewing the future development of theAlliance of China-Thailand Universities (ACTU). Eden Y Woon, President of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), made an online speech titled “Challenges and Opportunities for Asian Universities in the Post-Pandemic Era”. He probed into the orientation of Asian universities in the post-pandemic era in terms of international students’ enrollment, international talent flow, internationalization, teaching cooperation, scientific research cooperation, complementary cooperation, regional alliances, and the full use of Asian location advantages. Rome Chiranukrom, Vice President of Chiang Mai University, delivered his online speech titled “Future Vision on Lancang-Mekong Vocational Education”, emphasizing the importance of e-commerce industry project cooperation in promoting cultural exchanges as well as economic and trade ties between China and Thailand, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. LIU Qiaoquan, Vice President of Yangzhou University, gave a speech titled “Higher Education Cooperation under the Belt & Road Initiative”, expecting to build a community of research projects through the cooperation on China-Thailand higher education with the Alliance’s leading and the institutions’ participation, so as to boost a better and effective performance of bilateral interaction and cooperation. Narong Chavasint (present online), President of North-Chiang Mai University, and Wang Wei, President & CEO of East & West Institute of International Education, jointly delivered a speech, in which they proposed to innovate new models of joint course development and to promote the bidirectional Study Abroad programs in China and Thailand with the platform of ACTU. Pornchai Mongkhonvanit, President of Siam University, gave an online speech titled “Higher Education Transformation toward Sustainability”, and Wittawat Didyasarin Sattayaraksa, President of Hatyai University, delivered an online speech titled “Transformations in Higher Education in China and Thailand through International Collaboration”.

During the Forum, offline speeches were also delivered by the representatives from Nankai University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Southwest Jiaotong University, Beijing University of Technology, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, Hunan Agricultural University, Guizhou Normal University, University of Sanya, Guilin Tourism University, and recruitment center of Top 5 Thai public universities. The representatives from Huachiew Chalemprakiet University and King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand, exchanged their ideas in the online presentations.

The educators in Sino-Thai higher education assembled in the Forum, taking the floor one after another and sharing the experience and feelings in promoting the Sino-Thai cooperation and exchanges on higher education. All the participants have been devoting themselves to exploring new methods and pathways to innovate the cooperation models of higher education, build consensus and deepen the cooperation. It is believed that the success of the Forum will promote the regulated development of cultural exchanges and educational cooperation between China and Thailand along the line of institutionalization.
