Recently, top international academic journal Chemical Society Reviews (the latest issue is 54.564), published a research paper entitled "Density Functional Theory Studies of Transition Metal Carbides and Nitrides as Electrocatalysts" online with KUST listed as the first corresponding author. Professor WANG Hua and Professor LI Kongzhai of KUST, Professor CHEN Jingguang of Columbia University and Professor Shyam Kattel of Florida A&M University are the paper’s co-corresponding authors, and TIAN Dong, a doctoral student supervised by Professor WANG Hua, is the first author of this thesis. The research team led by Professor WANG Hua has been engaged in the research of metallurgical energy conservation and emission reduction for a long time. This paper is another breakthrough after the team published the paper on resource utilization of CO2 in Nature Communications (NAT. commun. 2019, 10, 1166) and Chem (Chem2020, 6, 419-430).

One of the anonymous reviewers of Chemical Society Reviews has highly praised the results, saying that “this study will be beneficialto a wide range of scientists working in the fields of experimental and computational catalysis.” The results of this paper are an example of the intersection of science and technology and the integration of fundamentals and applications. These results will be an important reference for experimental research, theoretical calculation, efficient catalysis and surface science research in the fields of energy and catalysis. The publication of this paper further demonstrates that KUST hasgreat international academic influence in hydrogen production, carbon emission, peak carbon dioxide emissions, carbon neutralization and other related experimental research and theoretical calculations.

Chemical Society Reviews was founded in 1972 and published by the Royal Society of Chemistry. This journal specializes in publishing high-level review articles (Reviews and Tutorial Reviews) in the fields of chemistry, energy, and related disciplines. It is globally recognized as one of the three most influential and authoritative academic journals in chemistry, chemical engineering, energy and materials. It is a top international journal withstrong academic influence and authority all over the world. The published papers play an important leading and guiding role in the development of related fields.

Author Introduction:
TIAN Dong received his M.S. degree in Condensed Matter Physics from the Faculty of Science, KUST in September 2013 (under the supervision of Professor ZENG Chunhua). He pursued his Ph.D. degree (successive postgraduate and doctoral program) in Metallurgical Physical Chemistry from the Faculty of Metallurgy and Energy Engineering in September 2015 (under the supervision of Professor Hua Wang). In 2018, he was awarded the “International Cooperative Training Program for Innovative Talents in the Field of Clean Utilization of Complex Non-ferrous Metal Resources” by the China Scholarship Council in order to study at Columbia University, USA (October 2018-October 2020). At present, he has published more than 10 papers as first or co-first author in top international SCI journals such as Chemical Society Reviews, Advanced Materials (cover articles, selected as ESI highly cited papers many times), Chem, Angew Chem Int Edit, and Nature Communications. Currently, he is a peer review expert of several internationally renowned SCI journals such astheJournal of Power Sources.
WANG Hua, is a Professor II, postdoctoral fellow of Kyoto University, and serves as the president of KUST. He is the director of the State Key Laboratory of Clean Utilization in Complex Non-ferrous Metal Resources jointly built by the Ministry and the Province. He is alsothe director of the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Metallurgical and Chemical Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Technology, as well asthe director of the Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education ofMetallurgical Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction. Additionally, he is the director oftheChina Nonferrous Metals Society and the director of Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Professional Committee. He has been devoted to the theory and engineering research of thermal process strengthening, energy saving and carbon reduction in metallurgical furnaces and kilns. He has undertaken 43 supporting programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology, key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation and important scientific research projects at provincial and ministerial levels. He has published more than 230 SCI/EI-indexed academic papers in Chemical Society Reviews, Nature Communications, Chem and others. Additionally, he has more than 4,000 SCI citations, has published 11 monographs and textbooks, and won 87 nationally authorized invention patents. In 2014 and 2017, he was selected as one of the leading talents in science and technology in Yunnan Province and one of the leading talents in science and technology among the national high-level talent special support program. In 2007, he was selected as one of the national candidates for the New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project. In 2011, he was awarded the special allowance of the State Council, then in 2014 he was given the title ofthenational outstanding scientific and technological worker. He received the certificate of merit in the second national innovation competition in 2020. He led the team to win the first andthesecond prizes of National Science and Technology Progress in 2012 and 2019, and the Grand Prize for Yunnan Science and Technology Progress and Natural Science in 2018 and 2020. In 2014, his innovation team wonthefirst prizein Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Progress.
