KUST ranked 64th on the list of the "Most Innovative Universities in Mainland China 2019" released by the World INS Conference Institute and other institutions in recent days. By counting and comparing the numbers of national science and technology awards, invention patents issued, papers published in top international academic journals, high-level talents, subjects ranking among the world’s top one percent in ESI and other indicators, this list sets out to evaluate the innovation of universities and colleges in terms of their scientific research levels, innovation potential, academic standards, constructions of platform and other aspects with the aim to pick out those universities that promote the advancement of new technologies, boost China's economic transformation and industrial upgrading.

On the list are mainly universities directly under the central government departments but some under the provincial governments are also included. Kunming University of Science and Technology is the only university in Yunnan Province that was selected. This ranking emphasizes innovation, practicality, cross-connection, and comprehensiveness. After years of development, Kunming University of Science and Technology has grown into a higher education institution that mainly focuses on engineering but also combines it with science and covers all fields of disciplines conferring academic degrees.
