8th International Collegiate Evening Gala Reported by The People’s Daily Overseas Edition Front Page

On the evening of December 19th, the 8th KUST International Collegiate Evening Gala entitled “Red Earth, World Wind” was held at the Hongtu Hall in Chenggong campus. Distinguished guests attending the gala included WU Youwen, the Consul of Myanmar, Vorapong Vadhanasindhu, the Consul of Thailand, ENG Chea and Chea Pharim, the Consuls of Cambodia, WANG Xueqin, the Deputy Secretary and President of KUST, ZHANG Yun, the Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Office of People’s Government of Yunnan Province and the representatives from Yunnan Power Grid Corporation. About 1300 teachers and students were present at the Gala. The Gala promotes cultural exchange and deepens friendship between Chinese and overseas teachers and students.



On behalf of KUST, President WANG Xueqin expressed his best New Year’s wishes to the distinguished guests, teachers and students present. He said that in 2018 KUST has achieved some major progress in schooling reform, talent training, disciplinary construction, scientific research, social services, and international cooperation. He said that presently, 1609 overseas students are studying at KUST, with 1131 being newly enrolled in 2018. There have been 356 Chinese students selected to participate in a variety of overseas exchange programs, an increase of 5% compared with that of last year. In cooperation with KUST, Confucius Institutes of Souphanouvong University has been officially opened, Business Confucius Class in Copenhagen Business School was authorized and the undergraduate program at University of Arkansas began to admit KUST students. All these achievements are attributed to the painstaking efforts made by KUST to promote international exchange.




In a combination of Chinese traditional culture and exotic cultures of other  countries, Chinese and overseas students presented the audiences a wonderful performance. The Gala was opened with a costume fashion show acted by students from all over the world. And then singing, martial arts, instrument playing, modern dance, classical dance were staged successively, raising the atmosphere of the annual party into a peak.




With the theme of “Seeking Common Development under the Belt and Road Initiative, Celebrating the Approach of a Happier New Year”, the Gala shows and performances were performed by more than 200 students from 18 countries including China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Pakistan, Kenya and so on. They highlighted the unique glory of traditional Chinese culture and foreign cultures, representing profound friendship between the teachers and students from home and abroad.
