Findings by Academician JI Weizhi and SUN Yi listed in 2017 Top Ten Scientific Advances in China

On January 26, 2018, the 2017 Top Ten Scientific Advances in China election results were announced by the Chinese Union of Life Science Societies(CULSS). The joint research Modeling Rett Syndrome Using TALEN-Edited MECP2 Mutant Cynomolgus Monkeys led by Academician JI Weizhi of KUST and Professor SUN Yi of Tongji University(TJU) was included in the list. On August 4, the Meeting of Experts on the 2017 Top Ten Scientific Advances in China and Teenager Science Popularization Symposium was held in Nanjing and Academician JI Weizhi and CHEN Yongchang attended the awarding ceremony.

Processor CHEN Yongchang and other 9 prize winners delivered science speeches for over 500 middle school and high school students from Nanjing Zhong Hua Secondary School, Foreign Language School, Middle School Attached to Nanjing Normal University, Jin Ling Middle School, HeXi and Nanjing Ninth Middle School. During the speech, they raised some interesting but tough(PHD level) scientific problems.   

 

Participants included Members of Chinese Academy of Sciences RAO Zihe, CHENG Heping, SHAO Feng, JI Weizhi and leaders of CAST, Jiangsu Province and Nanjing.

 

The project Modeling Rett Syndrome Using TALEN-Edited MECP2 Mutant Cynomolgus Monkeys launched in late 2012 focuses on modeling Rett Syndrome by knocking out gene MECP2. On May 18th, 2017, the findings have been published on Cell, a top international biology journal. RTT monkey models showed pioneering advantages over other animal models and played a vital role in RTT pathogenesis and treatment.
