Vice Premier LIU Yandong Inaugurated KUST Newly Established Confucius Institute

On December 12, the 12th Confucius Institute Conference, sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) was held in Xi'an. Over 2,500 Chinese and foreign delegates from 525 Confucius Institutes around the world gathered together to exchange experiences and discuss future development plans for the Confucius Institute.

Prof. PENG Jinhui, president of Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST), attended the conference.

At the conference, Ms. LIU Yandong, vice premier of the State Council and chairman of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, delivered a keynote speech and presented the nameplates to 10 newly establishedConfucius Institutes. The institute co-built by KUST and Souphanouvong University of Laos is included.

The plan to co-establish the Confucius Institute by KUST and Souphanouvong University emerged early in 2009. In September 2017, KUST went to Laos for a field visit together with Hanban. After seven years of  preparation, KUST and Souphanouvong University are eventually approved by Hanban to build the Confucius Institute.

The establishment of Confucius Institute will be a driving force for KUST to achieve international development, and it will be an approach and a platform for KUST to contribute to the "The Belt and Road" initiative and to develop new philosophy of building a community of shared future.
