Professor JI Weizhi Elected as CAS Academician

On November 28,  a list of newly elected academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was released on CAS official website. Professor JI Weizhi, dean of  Institue of  Primate Translational Medicine of Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST), has been honored as CAS academician, hence the first CAS academician from KUST.


The Brief Introduction of Professor JI Weizhi:

JI Weizhi, doctoral supervisor, graduated from Yunnan University in 1982. He was a visiting scholar at the Oregon National Primate Research Center from June 1987 to January 1989, and a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin Madison from October 1995 to June 1997. During 1982 to 2012, he worked in the Kunming Institute of Zoology of CAS and was promoted from assistant researcher to director. He has been the director of Yunnan Key Laboratory of Primate Biomedicine since December 2011, and a Distinguished Professor and dean of  Institue of  Primate Translational Medicine at KUST since December 2014.

Professor JI Weizhi is vice director of Chinese Society for Stem Cell Biology, expert of National Stem Cell Research Supervision and Coordination Committee, panelist of the National Major Scientific Research Program of Reproduction and Development, National Laboratory Animal Research Committee, chief scientist in 973 Program. Engaged in primate reproduction biology research for a long time, he has formed a ​research system based on early embryonic development control of primate, stem cell pluripotency and other scientific issues. He has made breakthrough in gene editing of primate model and firstly achieved the chimera of monkey embryonic stem cell in the world, which proves the pluripotency of primate embryonic stem cells. His series research has led the world. He has published over 150 papers in Cell, Cell Stem Cell, PNAS, Stem Cells, JBC, Biology of Reproduction and Human Reproduction. He has won the Lifetime Achievement Award of China Cell Biology Society, the Stem Cell Innovation Research Award of China Cell Biology Society Stem Cell Branch, the first prize of Yunnan Science and Technology Achievement Award, the second prize of Yunnan Science and Technology Achievement Award and the Second Prize of Yunnan Science and Technology Award.
