KUST and Royal Thai Consulate-General in Kunming Jointly held 2017 Songkran Festival Celebrations

On April 22, 2017, Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST) and Royal Thai Consulate-General jointly held 2017 Songkran Festival celebrations at KUST Red Earth Auditorium, Chenggong campus.



The distinguished guests attending the celebrations included Mr. Pornpop Uampidhaya, the Consul-General of Thailand, Mr. Daud Ali, the Consul-General of Bangladesh, Dato Siow Chen Pin the Consul-General of Malaysia, Mr. Soe Paing, the Consul-General of Myanma, Mr. Siev Ma, the Consul Protocol of Cambodia, Mr. Bounsonh Thammavongsing, Consul of Laos, Mr. Nguyen Hong Quan, Consul of Vietnam, Madam ZHOU Hong, the Chair of Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries of Yunnan and the representatives of universities in Kunming. The celebrations are to enhance the relationship between China and Southeast Asian countries, build up platforms for the favorable exchanges between governments and students, and create international and multicultural campuse.



At the opening ceremony, Consul-General Pornpop Uampidhaya expressed his thanks to Yunnan Provincial Department of Education, Foreigh Affairs Office of Yunnan Province, KUST and other universities for what they had done for the event, addressed the objective of the event and delivered his New Year’s wishes to Thai students in Kunming.



KUST Vice President Prof. WANG Hua made the opening remark and extended a warm welcome to all the guests. In the opening remark, Vice President WANG gave an account of the students exchange and joint degree programs as well as scientific research co-operations between KUST and universities of Southeast Asian countries. He said that KUST, being the largest-scale and the only university of science and technology in Yunnan Province, has maintained a close cooperation with universities, enterprises and governments of Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries, and KUST hopes the celebrations will boost the friendly ties between KUST and Mekong countries and contribute to their common prosperity.



A variety of cultural activities were held during the celebrations, including ritual watering ceremony, Thai food and dessert sales exhibition, Thai and Chinese cultural performances and Miss Songkran Beauty Contest. Before the opening ceremony, the VIP guests from different countries attended the ritual watering ceremony for the Buddha statue, experiencing the cultures and customs of the traditional Asian festival.




The 2017 Songkran Festival celebrations not only enhanced the connections between international students in Kunming, but also promoted the friendship between China and Mekong countires.
