KUST Wins National Science and Technology Award

     Professor WEN Shuming from the Faculty of Land Resource Engineering, Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST) was invited to attend the annual National Science and Technology Awards Conference  of China held in Beijing on the 9th of January, 2017, and the R&D achievement of the project The Key Technology on the Comprehensive Utilization of Nonferrous Metals Associated Pyrite Resources and Its Application, led by Professor Wen,was awarded the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award 2016 on the conference. This makes the 14th national level Science and Technology prizes of KUST since 2000. This prize also marks the only national level prize earned by the institutions in Yunnan province in 2016, among the 3 most important national level science and technology awards including the Natural Science Award, Technology Invention Award, and Science and Technology Progress Award.


     Aiming at utilizing the iron resources in pyrite, Prof. WEN Shuming and his research group have been focusing on the study of pyrite resources associated with nonferrous metals for many years. Supported by multiple sectors including the Ministry of Science and Technology and National Natural Science Foundation, after more than ten years of theoretical study and technical improvements, the team finally made a series of major break throughs throughclose industry-university-research collaboration, transformation of academicideas, and continuous innovation of key techniques. A set of new technology hasbeen developed, with the focus on “synchronized recycle of polymorphic pyrite -surface hydrophobicity control and in-depth concentration - desulfurization andacid-making by high temperature peroxide calcination - direct co-production ofiron concentrate”. The integrated technology was gradually popularized in 2009in Yunnan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Guangdong, etc., leading to the production of high quality sulfur concentrate with 90%-95% ferric sulfide content andquality iron concentrate with 60%+ iron grade and 0.4%- sulfur content. In thepast seven years since its application, the technological achievement hasgenerated a total revenue of nearly 10 billion yuan. The technology hasexpanded pyrite from chemical resources to iron resources, increasing China’siron resources by 5%-8%. Its potential economic value—according to theestimation of geologists—exceeds 1,200 billion yuan. The evaluation committee comments that containing major innovations in academic ideas, theories andtechniques, the achievement of the project can be considered as internationally industry-leading. The technology has been applied nationwide, playing an important role in promoting the technological advances in China’smineral separation process.
