GMSARN International Conference and Board Meeting Hosted by KUST

The11thGreater Mekong Sub-region Academic and Research Network (GMARN) InternationalConference 2016 on “Innovative Energy, Environment, and Development in GMS” opened on November 16 at UChoice Hotel, Kunming. The 3-day conference was organized by GMSARN, co-organizedby Asia Institute of Technology (AIT) and Kunming University of Science andTechnology (KUST), hosted by KUST. Nearly 80 participants from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. and around 30 from China joined the conference. Prof. ZHANG Yingjie, Chair of University Committee of KUST, delivered a warm welcome speech at the opening ceremony.


Immediately following the international conference, the 20th Joint Meeting of the GMSARN Board Members and Council of Advisors was held on KUST campus on the afternoon, November 18. Representatives of 14 GMSARN member universities, including Prof. WANG Hua, Vice President of KUST, were present at the meeting. The meeting agenda included the turn over of GMSARN Chairmanship from Royal University of Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Chair of 2015, to KunmingUniversity of Science and Technology, 2016 Financial Report, proposals for future activities, existing and potential cooperation with the International Development Research Center (IDRC) of Canada, Research & Education Networkin GMS, and GMSARN International Journal etc. The application of Naresuan University, Thailand was approved by the Board, to become a GMSARN associate memberin 2017. The next GMSARN International Conference and Joint Meeting will beheld in Danang, Vietnam in November 2017. After the board meeting, the representatives enjoyed a KUST campus tour, by visiting the Engineering Training Center, the exhibition of the architecture students’ fieldwork drawing and painting, and the exhibition on Ancient Yunnan Architecture, as well asYunnan Provincial Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.


Founded in 2001, the Greater Mekong Sub-region Academic and Research Network (GMSARN)is composed of 14 top level higher education institutions in the GMS. GMSARN carries out activities in the following areas: human resources development, joint research, and dissemination of information and intellectual assets generated in the GMS. GMSARN seeks to ensure that the holistic intellectual knowledge and assets generated, developed and maintained are shared by the academic organizations within the region.
